free eBook, Setting up and Configuring a New PC

Thumbnail

Posted on Windows 7 News & Tips It’s Christmas, that traditional time of high PC sales when people give and receive new computers.  To mark the occasion I’ve written a short eBook on how to set up and configure a new PC.  In this completely free 25 page printable guide I deal, first and foremost with the age-old problem of the missing Windows 7 installation DVD and what you can do about it.  Other subjects covered include creating your own backup and restore disks for Windows 7, how to secure your files, photos, music and video away from Windows 7 to prevent a disaster wiping them out, and how to deal with bloatware and trial versions of anti-virus software. There are always issues surrounding new computers, not the least of which is the missing installation DVD.  Others include the sheer amount of useless software that’s commonly pre-installed on them.  This software is commonly set to run at start-up and can slow down your computer.  Another issue is that the anti-virus software instaled on new PCs is commonly a time-limited trial that expires, and stops protecting your computer, after a few months

Microsoft Moves Windows Phone Head Over to Windows 8

Posted on Windows 7 News & Tips In a surprising move today, Microsoft’s CEO, Steve Ballmer, announced via an email that he is moving now former Windows Phone head over to the Windows 8 division to “focus on ways Microsoft can work across multiple types of devices from phones to slates to PCs.” In an email that was first reported on by AllThingsD , Ballmer notes: “I have asked Andy Lees to move to a new role working for me on a time-critical opportunity focused on driving maximum impact in 2012 with Windows Phone and Windows 8. We have tremendous potential with Windows Phone and Windows 8, and this move sets us up to really deliver against that potential.” It doesn’t appear that Ballmer will replace Lees as the head of Windows Phone in title, but will instead be moving corporate vice president Terry Myerson to handle both marketing and business development

Microsoft squashes Duqu threat with Windows patch

A month after releasing a temporary workaround to block malware exploiting a Windows kernel vulnerability, Microsoft today issued a patch for all supported releases of Windows aimed at putting an end to attacks based on the Duqu worm. Duqu, reminiscent of last year’s Stuxnet threat , has reportedly been used in Europe, Iran, Sudan, and the United States. The attacks exploited a vulnerability in Windows’ TrueType font engine, letting hackers gain access to the Windows kernel and run shell code, providing the ability to install programs, manipulate data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
