Microsoft is Sticking with Qualcomm Chips for Windows Phone

Posted on Windows 7 News & Tips In an interview with Bloomberg , Andy Lees, the head of Microsoft’s Windows Phone division said that Microsoft will continue to work exclusively with Qualcomm for processors for Windows Phones for the forseeable future. Adding that “there is currently no plan to work with other semiconductor makers for Windows Phone devices.” This may or may not come as a surprise, especially as Microsoft are currently embracing ARM designed chips for Windows 8. Many people might have expected Microsoft to broaden the net and allow other chip manufacturers to come in, or maybe even port the operating system to the next generation of low-power Intel processors. The plan is to bring the unit manufacturing cost for Windows Phones down to less than $200, compared to an average of $400 a year ago when the platform was released. “Volume, volume, volume” was the reason stated, clearly indicating that Microsoft feels the best way to win out against Android and the iPhone, or at least gain a meaningful market share, is to be everywhere and on as many handsets as possible.
