Microsoft: A Numbers Game

With the great deal of hoopla made over each million iPad that’s sold, it’s no suprise that Frank Shaw over at The Microsoft Blog posted some numbers of his own, regarding Microsoft’s figures. With the majority of the world watching Apple and their keynotes, we sometimes forget that while most of the tech world watches Apple, the majority of us actually watch, buy and use Microsoft-influenced products. You don’t realize how prevalent Microsoft is until you see the numbers, but they are certainly more than just the leader in the desktop OS world, their numbers in many other fields are quite impressive as well.

Strange Creatures of the World Wide Web

This blog covers the early development of the Internet, Search Engines, and the inherent risks with the malicious applications called Malware and how you can protect your computer and its data.     The Development of the World Wide Web    Within the World Wide Web, there are many strange creatures.  You will find Spiders , Web Crawlers and Bots .  These wander around the Web searching for information.   A Web crawler is a computer program that browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner or in an orderly fashion. Other terms for Web crawlers are ants , automatic indexers , bots , and worm or Web spider , Web robot ,   Generally, these are used for benign purposes, but with all forms of human behaviour, there are some who use the Web for nefarious purposes.  They want to steal your information, disrupt your computer system or endangered human life with terrorist attacks.     Early Pioneers    Vannevar Bush published an article, “ As We May Think ” in the Atlantic monthly, where he urged scientists to work together to build up a repository of knowledge for mankind.  Bush, not George (you know who), was a firm believer in the need to store data.  He proposed developing a device which he called “ memex ”.  The information it contained would be limitless and fast, extensible and easily retrievable.   Capitalising on his ideas led to the gradual development of the World Wide Web.  It was not until really the 1960s that Vannevar Bush’s ideas were followed up seriously.   Gerard Salton working at Harvard and Cornell University developed the SMART informational retrieval system.   Ted Nelson created Project Xanadu in 1960 and devised the term “ hypertext ” in 1963.   The development of ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), a by-product of the Cold War, contributed to the development the internet.   In Europe, Berners-Lee suggested a project using hypertext to facilitate sharing and updating information among researchers.  CERN became the largest Internet names in Europe.    As with all new technology, new words were created to describe new processes.  It was about this time that the term “ Bot ” came into being.    Web Bots    These are computer robots are programs that automate can repetitive tasks at speeds faster than a human could replicate.      Web Spiders    Search engines use “ spiders ” that search the web for information.  A spider is a software program that requests information from indexed data on the Web.
