Microsoft patching "Google hack" flaw in IE tomorrow

Microsoft has issued an Advanced Notification for the out-of-band security bulletin it is releasing tomorrow for Internet Explorer at approximately 10 am PST. The patch will fix vulnerabilities in IE6, IE7, and IE8 on supported editions of Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2—vulnerabilities notably exploited in the recent series of Chinese-based attacks against Google and 30 other tech companies

Microsoft investigates 17-year-old Windows flaw

Reports have surfaced about a new security hole that has been in Windows since the release of Windows NT 3.1 on July 27, 1993. The vulnerability is present in all 32-bit versions of Windows released since then, including Windows 7.

AJAX who? Silverlight-powered Bing Maps leaves beta

Microsoft has taken the beta tag off its the Silverlight version of the Bing Maps service, which it launched seven weeks ago, and has now set it as the default. Redmond says the Silverlight version and related changes (performance improvements, bug fixes, and small UI changes) will start to roll out to just a small percentage of users and will arrive in the rest of the US over the next few weeks. Silverlight and AJAX versions of Bing Maps will continue to coexist.

Opera 10.5 Beta Adds Windows 7 Goodness

I haven’t downloaded the newest version of Opera’s browser, but Lifehacker.com, among others, reports that the new beta will include full integration of Jump Lists and Aero Peak. Also, the interface has been redesigned to help those using Vista or Windows 7 to take advantage of the Aero glass interface

Apple Updates Boot Camp for Windows 7

Apple has finally updated its Boot Camp Windows software to support Windows 7 as of late yesterday. The update, version 3.1, was originally scheduled for 2009, but late in the year was pushed back to early 2010, leading some to question Apple’s dedication to supporting Windows on their platform. The update, which comes in both 32-bit (380.73 MB) and 64-bit (274.58 MB) flavors, supports Windows 7 Home Premium , Professional, and Ultimate.

Analyst: Zune Phone coming in next two months

Jefferies & Company analyst Katherine Egbert told her clients last night that Redmond is getting ready to launch a phone based on Windows Mobile 7. “Our recent industry checks indicate Microsoft will be debuting its own phone sometime in the next two months,” Egbert said. “We expect the new phone to debut soon, at either the Feb 15-18 Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona Spain, or possibly at CTIA in Las Vegas one month later.” Egbert says the company is “partnering with a few OEM manufacturers,” similar to what Google has done with the Nexus One, to create a Zune-like phone which will have 720p HD video capabilities, at least a 5MP camera, and that will run Windows Mobile 7.
